Consider Being a Parish Council Member

04-10-2022Letter from the PastorFr. Don Kline, V.F.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

St. Bernadette parish exists so that God’s children may develop, grow, embrace and live the faith and life of Our Lord Jesus Christ as revealed and taught by the Gospel and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Canon 515 of the Code of Canon Law states:

A parish is a definite community of the Christian faithful established on a stable basis within a particular church; the pastoral care of the parish is entrusted to a pastor as its own shepherd under the authority of the diocesan bishop.

Furthermore, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states this about the parish:

It is the place where all the faithful can be gathered together for the Sunday Eucharist. The parish initiates the Christian people into the ordinary expression of the liturgical life: it gathers them together in this celebration; it teaches Christ’s saving doctrine; and it practices the charity of the Lord in good works and love.

St. Bernadette parish continues to strive to develop and carry out its mission of providing opportunities for people to encounter the living Christ through the liturgical, spiritual and ministerial activities of the parish. As we journey together in faith, may our prayer always be that the parishioners of St. Bernadette parish mirror, in all ways, the values, teachings and life of our Lord Jesus Christ.

To that end, an important part of any healthy parish includes the involvement of members from that parish seeking to live out the mission given to us by Christ Himself. A very effective way to involve yourself in a parish is to assist the pastor in serving Our Lord as a parish council member. The parish council can be a wonderful instrument of helping a parish grow in holiness. A key role of parish council members is to advise the pastor on important parish matters.

Over the past 26 years, we have had some excellent input from our dedicated parish council members. I am so grateful to all our members, especially to Don Tellis, the current president of our council who has done outstanding work in this position for many years.

We are looking for nominations for the council! Please prayerfully consider nominating someone for this important work of service here at St. Bernadette. Remember that person must be an active, registered, and contributing member to qualify. Please submit your nominations by emailing Deacon Al at deaconal@saintbernadette.com.
