Glorifying God (Part II of II)

07-19-2020Letter from the PastorFr. Don Kline, V.F.

In choosing stained glass windows and sacred art for the interior of our beautiful church, glorifying God is always the priority. How do we choose? The bishops' document offers two ways of evaluating sacred art. The first way focuses on the quality. "Quality is evident in the honesty and genuineness of the materials that are used, the nobility of the form embodied in them, the love and care that goes into the creation of a work of art, and the personal stamp of the artist whose special gift produces a harmonious whole, a well-crafted work." (Built of Living Stones, ch. 3)

The second bit of criteria that needs to be considered is the appropriateness of the art. "Appropriateness is demonstrated by the work's ability to bear the weight of mystery, awe, reverence, and wonder that the liturgical action expresses and by the way it serves and does not interrupt the ritual actions which have their own structure, rhythm and movement." (Built of Living Stones, ch. 3)

Glorifying God with sacred art, music and architecture here at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, will involve many gifted and generous people. As we continue our journey of faith, we continue in prayer. Prayer unites our hearts and minds. Let us pray God's will be done as we seek to glorify Him. Let us pray that our motives are pure and our attention on the things that will give glory to God. Let us pray for wisdom and right judgement and in all things, God will be glorified.

I am looking forward to working with those who feel called to share their gifts with our community. It is my hope that we will work together to prayerfully discern God's will for our parish. May our goal of glorifying God give us the chance to work together with talented individuals who will help make our dreams a reality.

"Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier." (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2502)
