A Catholic's Vote (part 4 of 4)

08-16-2020Letter from the PastorFr. Don Kline, V.F.

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Informed Catholics need to agree on the foundational issues that have made this nation the greatest nation in the history of the world. Our nation is a beacon of freedom for literally billions of people. We've been blessed to live a very family-friendly state. One of the reasons we find Arizona to be so pro-family is because Catholics in the public square have worked hard to bring pro-family legislation to our Arizona legislature. We are one of the most Pro-life states because so much legislation has been signed into law by pro-life, pro-family, and pro-freedom governors through the years.

Goodness can erode and we are finding that there are those who oppose our way of life that we have come to enjoy as Catholics. This is nothing new. Catholic values and principles have always been under attack¼ perhaps more now than ever before in our lifetime. There are those who are confused and wish to destroy the family and the Church. Many people oppose God and disregard His Commandments. Sadly, many people do not recognize what is true, good, and beautiful.

What do those who do not know or care about the love of God want? Here are a few things that people who have no sense of God or His love for them are hoping will become a reality for all citizens:

  • unlimited legal abortion with taxpayer funding,
  • letting biological boys compete in girls' sports,
  • ending charter schools, scholarship tuition organizations, and educational savings accounts, and
  • curtailing the free speech and rights of conscience for people of faith

According the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church paragraph 411: When an individual violates an essential good it is called sin. When the political authority does so, besides being gravely wrong for the individuals passing, defending or otherwise approving of such laws, it undermines the common good and constitutes political corruption. This sort of corruption will dramatically change our culture and our society in ways that will hurt our families and our children. Your vote will determine what sort of world we want to live in. When a culture is willing to destroy the most fundamental right to life, we are headed in the wrong direction. As Mother Theresa once said: "Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion."

America can be the "city on the hill" burning the bright light of justice and peace in the world but we must remember that God loves us. If you know you are loved by God, then you can love others as He loves us. This is how America can remain a shining example of goodness in the world. Let us remain vigilant in our quest to protect the weakest of the weak — the unborn child. If you remain close to Our Lord and bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the world, then really you will be true to what the founders of this country stood for.
